The World Bank has introduced a new gender strategy to enhance economic opportunities for women worldwide. This plan aims to help women participate more in the global economy by providing social support, access to broadband internet, and capital for businesses.
Announced during the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings in Washington, the Gender Strategy 2024-2030 sets ambitious goals for the year 2030:
- Access to Broadband Internet: Enable 300 million more women to use broadband internet, opening doors to essential services, financial resources, education, and job opportunities.
- Social Protection Programs: Support 250 million women with programs focusing on the poorest and most vulnerable, strengthening social safety nets.
- Capital for Women-Led Businesses: Provide 80 million more women and women-led businesses with capital to overcome barriers in entrepreneurship.
World Bank President Ajay Banga stated, “When we increase women’s economic participation, it not only boosts the global economy but also strengthens families and communities. Through economic empowerment, we are building a ladder out of poverty and extending hope and dignity as far as possible.”
