The people of Jammu are expecting the Omar government to hold panchayat elections this year. The demand for elections is growing, as right now, Block Development Officers (BDOs) are handling the responsibilities of around 38,000 Sarpanchs and Panchs across all districts. However, elections can only happen once the reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) is sorted out. The OBC Commission is currently working on this.
Anil Sharma, President of the All J&K Panchayat Conference, pointed out that it’s difficult for 90 officers to manage the duties of so many public representatives. This has affected the proper functioning of the panchayats for quite some time. He congratulated the new National Conference (NC) government and expressed hope that they will prioritize the panchayat elections in their first assembly session.
Sharma also shared that if their 11-member delegation gets a meeting with the Omar government, they will offer suggestions to help improve and strengthen the panchayat system. The state government has extended the deadline for the Backward Classes Commission, which is responsible for recommending OBC reservations, to December 2024. The three-member OBC Commission, which was set up in July, is expected to submit its report by December 31, 2024. If the government pushes for it, the commission might deliver the report sooner, and the dates for the panchayat elections could be announced.
