India’s Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, says the country’s fast economic growth is because people are using digital infrastructure. She believes that without citizens embracing free digital technology, India wouldn’t be the fastest-growing economy today.

Speaking at the Wharton Business School, University of Pennsylvania, she highlighted that providing free digital access and running awareness programs in local languages helped many people adopt technology. This move empowered millions, giving them access to various services and opportunities.

She mentioned that the Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) has changed how people access essential services, especially in remote areas. This infrastructure has made it easier for citizens to connect with government initiatives. India’s success in digital governance has been recognized worldwide, including during its G20 presidency.

Sitharaman noted that this digital revolution has not only boosted economic growth but also positioned India as a leader in digital transformation. She emphasized that a strong digital foundation is a key reason for India’s rapid progress in recent years.

Looking ahead, the minister stated that India aims to become a developed nation by 2047. She identified four key areas: infrastructure (both physical and digital), investment (public and private), innovation, and inclusiveness. These will help the country move toward this goal.
