The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about heavy rain in Maharashtra and several neighboring states until October 16. This alert comes after heavy downpours hit parts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, just two days ago. The storms brought lightning and heavy rain, disrupting the Navratri celebrations and causing widespread flooding.

On Thursday, many residents were caught off guard by the intensity of the rain, especially since the weather department had only predicted light to moderate rainfall for Mumbai with a ‘yellow’ alert.

The heavy rain created major issues, particularly in the Prabhadevi area, where flooded streets made it difficult for commuters, especially around Elphinstone Road and NM Joshi Marg.

The IMD’s forecast indicates that from October 12 to 16, several states will experience heavy rainfall. The areas at the highest risk include Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, the Konkan and Goa regions, Madhya Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, and Gujarat.

On October 13, the IMD warned of very heavy rainfall in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, with more rain expected in Konkan, Goa, Gujarat, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Further rain is also likely in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Saurashtra and Kutch in the days to come.

As the weather system develops, special attention will be needed on October 15 and 16, when heavy rainfall is expected in Rayalaseema, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala.
