Bengaluru has been dealing with heavy rainfall over the past week, leading to waterlogging in parts of the city and disruptions at Kempegowda International Airport. Several flights have been delayed, canceled, or diverted as a result of the downpour. The city has recorded 62 mm of rain in the past 24 hours, which brings Bengaluru’s total rainfall for October to 234.4 mm—well above the usual average of 168.3 mm for this time of year.

Airport Disruptions and School Closures

The heavy rain on Monday night caused major disruptions at the Kempegowda International Airport. At least 20 flights were delayed, with some being rerouted to other cities like Chennai. Among the affected flights, an Air India flight from Delhi and several Indigo flights were diverted. The intense weather also led to school closures in certain areas of Bengaluru for the second time in a week.

Why is Bengaluru Experiencing Such Heavy Rainfall?

The ongoing heavy rainfall in Bengaluru is due to several weather systems at play. A cyclonic circulation in the west-central Arabian Sea and another near the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu coast are influencing the current weather patterns. Additionally, a low-pressure area in the Bay of Bengal is also contributing to the city’s rains. These systems are expected to keep bringing rain until the end of October.

Bengaluru’s Rain Pattern

Bengaluru is experiencing higher-than-normal rainfall this October, making up for a dry September when the city only saw 23.4 mm of rain. The heavy rainfall is expected to continue today and on 23rd October, with a decrease in intensity over the next few days before the monsoon begins to taper off by the end of the month.
