A new study has shown that eating strawberries could be a simple and tasty way to manage cholesterol and improve heart health. Cardiovascular disease is a major cause of death worldwide, and this research highlights how strawberries can help reduce the risk. According to the study, eating between 1 to 4 cups of strawberries each day can lead to better overall heart health.
The research was conducted by experts at the University of California, Davis, and was supported by the California Strawberry Commission. It reviewed data from 47 clinical trials and 13 studies published between 2000 and 2023. The findings, published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition in September 2024, show that strawberries are rich in nutrients like polyphenols and fiber. These nutrients can help lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides, while also reducing inflammation, which is important for heart health.
Whether eaten fresh, frozen, or freeze-dried, strawberries have been found to improve cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. By helping with lipid metabolism and decreasing inflammation, strawberries can support those who are at higher risk for heart issues.
“Strawberries are full of nutrients that are good for the heart,” said Dr. Roberta Holt, the lead researcher at the University of California, Davis. “Our review shows that eating strawberries regularly can lower cholesterol and reduce inflammation, which are key factors in heart disease. Even adding just a cup of strawberries to your daily diet can have a big impact on heart health.”
The study also points out that strawberries may have benefits beyond heart health. They could help protect brain health and slow down cognitive decline due to their high levels of flavonoids. These nutrients help reduce oxidative stress, which is important for keeping the brain healthy as we age.
Nutrition expert Toby Amidor, M.S., R.D.N., added, “Many people are looking for natural ways to stay healthy, and strawberries are an easy, delicious, and affordable option. They are packed with nutrients like fiber and vitamin C, and can be easily added to meals like smoothies, salads, or eaten as a snack.”
Amidor joined the California Strawberry Commission at the Food & Nutrition Conference and Expo in Minneapolis in October 2024, where they shared information about the benefits of strawberries with dietitians and health experts.
