The Indian government is gearing up to extend access to its ambitious PM GatiShakti National Master Plan (NMP) portal to the private sector by the end of this year. This move, aimed at enhancing collaboration between the public and private sectors, is currently under discussion, according to Amardeep Singh Bhatia, Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).

The GatiShakti initiative, launched in October 2021, aims to create an integrated infrastructure system that reduces logistics costs and enhances connectivity across the country. Projects with investments over ₹500 crore are already benefiting from this platform, which facilitates seamless planning and implementation.

The portal currently offers over 1,600 layers of critical data, including information on land, ports, forests, and highways, and has so far been accessible only to government bodies. However, with plans to expand access to private entities, the government is carefully evaluating sensitive data layers that should remain restricted.

“We are working with the private sector and consulting with them to determine the best way forward,” said Bhatia. “Our goal is to roll out access by the end of this year.”

Discussions surrounding this expansion were previously held at the Geospatial Data Promotion and Development Committee (GDPDC) meeting in July. The DPIIT, in partnership with BISAG-N (Bhaskaracharya National Institute for Space Applications and Geoinformatics), is tasked with creating a framework for registered users to gain access to non-restricted data on the NGDR (National Geospatial Data Registry) platform.

The GatiShakti platform is built on a dynamic Geographic Information System (GIS), incorporating the strategic plans of various ministries and departments into a unified database, which will soon become an invaluable tool for private companies in infrastructure and logistics.

Stay tuned as the government continues to finalize the details and works towards a broader, more inclusive access to the PM GatiShakti portal, marking a significant step forward in India’s infrastructure and logistics landscape.
